Hilly Sands Born September 1, 1883, on the Pacific island paradise of Krakatau. Hilly Sands was a lot of things to a lot of people! Friend, good neighbour, Loving Husband, Respected Hagiographer and of course, a STAR! The critics called him "The Caliph of the Catskills". His myriad of television and big screen appearances captured the hearts of millions of fans. In Hungary, Hilly was revered, even idolized. In fact, he was made an honourable saint of the Hungarian Orthodox church by Monsignor Kevin Houlihan in 1977. Never one to bang his own drum, Hilly Sands rarely discussed his charitable work and the thousands of hours of time he gave freely to such wonderful organizations as Tomorrow's Kids Today, Veterans of Foreign Covert Actions, Just a Penny a Day, and many, many more. Whatever the job, Hilly was always ready, willing and able to roll up those famous sleeves of his and get to work. I supposed I've gone on long enough. I'm sure that by now, should he read this, Hilly, that pillar of modesty, would have told me to "shut my fuckin' mouth" and clocked me with his favorite 9-iron. By the way, it was a gift from his old golfing buddy and fellow Magyar, funnyman Luka Penir. He took that damn thing everywhere! O.K. Hilly. Enough already! We salute you. |
